poor save, tolya. you just said you like to admire me. ergo, you just called me handsome AND charming.
i'll have to buy you a drink after this, and i won't even accidentally spill anything on one of your books this time.
although i maintain that was your fault for bringing a book to a tavern.

in my defense, i was drunk and can't possibly be held responsible for my actions that night or any other night.
anyway, i already told you that we'll make a quick trip to os alta one day and i promise i'll let you steal whatever you want out of the palace library. i consider that quite a fair atonement.

my charm is not occasional. it is relentlessly enduring.
are you? i find that disturbing. are you sure? do we need to test this theory?
two drinks, a meal, and i'll sing you a sea shanty so dirty you won't be able to look me in the eye for a week without blushing.
but i need that locket first, or i'm afraid i'll have no choice but to leave you in jail, and then tamar will kill me, and so you see how this is a very undesirable option for me.

[ doesn't he? maybe not. but it's hard to forget he ran from his home instead of staying to rebuild, whatever choice he had in the matter, and that he ran from his friends for fear of getting them hurt.

(or maybe they're the exceptions that prove tolya's point.)

and as for discrediting himself, ]

I think you might think I'm more interesting than I really am.

[ and that feels a rapidly growing part of his life. despite revelations about the dragon, about his adoption, he still doesn't feel like he ought to be much more than a small town sheepherder. not like the likes of tolya and tamar, from seafaring to protecting a living saint. ]
